Arguably
the most famous traditional puppets in the Western World, the
Punch and Judy Show synonymous with British seaside holidays
of yesteryear has come a long way since an Italian puppet called
Pulcinella was first recorded in the 1662 diary of Samuel Pepys
after a Covent Garden show. In partnership with the VA Museum
of Childhood aims to show how Punch & Judy developed into a
form of popular entertainment still thriving in 2012 the 350th
anniversary of Mr. Punch. It will work nationally with a wide
network of volunteer groups, museums, local authorities, schools
and colleges and - most importantly - the Punch and Judy men
and women of Great Britain. It will explore Punch's European
roots, the popular role the Punch and Judy Show has since played
in millions of childhood memories, and create a new media archive
of the 350 year old art form and its place in UK culture to
be publicly accessible for the first time.

Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo is a form of puppet theatre created
by Nishikawa Koryu I nearly 150 years ago, in the late Edo
Period. It is called "Kuruma Ningyo" because the
puppeteer sits on a small seat with roller wheels (rokuro
kuruma) when operating a puppet (ningyo).
ishikawa Koryu became the 5th iemoto of the Kuruma Ningyo
troupe in 1996.
As well, English and Japanese verbal explanations about Kuruma
Ningyo (puppets) and Gidayu (chanter) will be provided as
a part of the event and English subtitles will accompany the
performances.

RED WAGON COLLECTIVE: DONATIONS NEEDED:
fabric, wool, embroidery floss, needles, crochet hooks, old
sweaters
RED WAGON COLLECTIVE was formed in 2006 in response to our desire
to deepen our artistic, collaborative, and community-engaged
practices through residency projects that would enable us to
develop both intensive and extensive relationships in the Junction
- a rapidly changing neighbourhood in Toronto's west end. We
share a desire to work collaboratively with artists and non-artists
to create work that inspires new conversations; softens boundaries
between groups separated by age, culture, ability, and economic
status; promotes the presence of art in everyday life and contributes
to increasing public engagement in community development. The
work we create with communities is used in producing exhibitions,
public installations, and celebratory performance events. We
are currently working within the walls of the Evangeline Shelter.
